Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery is a vision correction procedure used to treat refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which reshapes the cornea, ICL involves placing a soft, biocompatible lens between the iris and the natural lens of the eye, offering a reversible and long-term solution for clear vision.
The need for ICL may arise from symptoms like persistent blurry vision, difficulty in seeing distant or nearby objects clearly, headaches due to eye strain, or dependency on corrective glasses or contact lenses. These symptoms are often signs of refractive errors that can be corrected with ICL.
ICL surgery is typically recommended for individuals who are not suitable candidates for laser eye surgery due to thin corneas, dry eyes, or high degrees of refractive error. It is especially useful for people with severe myopia or those who prefer a non-permanent solution, as the lens can be removed or replaced if necessary.
The ICL procedure is quick, typically taking 20–30 minutes per eye and is performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is made, and the foldable lens is inserted and positioned behind the iris. Since the procedure doesn’t remove or alter the natural lens, it maintains the natural accommodation ability of the eye. Recovery is usually swift, with most patients noticing immediate improvement in vision.
ICL lenses are made of a collagen-based material that is highly compatible with the eye and resists rejection or allergic reactions. The results are stable, and the risk of dry eyes is minimal compared to LASIK.
Overall, ICL surgery is a safe, effective, and versatile option for vision correction, especially for those unsuitable for other surgical alternatives.
