Dry Eye Disease, also known as dry eye syndrome, is a common condition where the eyes fail to produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to inflammation and damage to the eye surface. It can cause significant discomfort and may interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, or using digital screens.
Symptoms include a gritty or burning sensation, redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, watery eyes (a reflex response to dryness), and a feeling of something stuck in the eye.
Causes vary and may include aging, hormonal changes (especially in women), prolonged screen time, contact lens use, certain medications (like antihistamines, antidepressants), medical conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or thyroid disorders, and environmental factors like wind or dry air.
Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause. Mild cases can be managed with over-the-counter artificial tears or lubricating eye drops. More persistent cases may require prescription eye drops, anti-inflammatory medications, or punctal plugs to retain moisture. Lifestyle changes such as blinking regularly during screen use, using humidifiers, wearing wraparound sunglasses, and maintaining proper hydration can also help.
Early diagnosis and proper management of dry eye are essential to prevent complications and ensure long-term eye comfort and health.
